Building universities’ intrapreneurial capabilities in the digital era: The role and impacts of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)

Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have received a lot of attention over the last few years. Although technological/pedagogical aspects MOOCs been well articulated in literature, empirical evidence substantiating MOOCs' role university outcomes is scarce. This study aims to fill this gap by exploring relationships among (a) ordinary capabilities that are necessary achieve university's core strategies (i.e., teaching quality, research and administrative quality); (b) intrapreneurial accomplish entrepreneurial strategy MOOC orientation assuming risks, sensing opportunities, transforming routines become more innovative proactive); (c) expected from these prestige teaching/research, attraction local/international students, diversification income structure). Based on an analysis 145 universities around world, results show MOOC-based play direct achievement outcomes, as indirect role, mediating positive effect outcomes. These findings contribute current understanding entrepreneurship strategic management debates about antecedents/consequences capabilities. A provoking discussion implications for theory, practice, policymakers emerge study.
